This old mask shows
the great Hindu god, Shiva. The representation has typical
iconographic details such as blue hued skin, hair bundled into a
top knot in the manner of a sadhu (Hindu ascetic yogi), and the
open third eye in the center of the forehead. The soft, child
like features in a cherubic style are typical of the way Hindu
deities were portrayed in popular devotional art from the early
years of the 20th century. Condition is good with obvious loss
of pigments and an old repair to the right ear as might be
expected in old, well used festival masks.
