Detail photos
What an interesting
and rare mask this one is! Originating in a Tamang / Gurung
community in the middle hills, it is distinguished by its
wonderful convex form - a quality that is difficult to capture
in photos. The mask has an interesting rectangular shape,
with strong angular lines contrasted by the curved shape of the
wood mentioned above. It has primitive features common
among the Gurung, Tamang and Magar masks. There are
remnants of goat fur moustache and beard. It reminds one
of the Kachina masks found among the Indians in the South
West, United States to some degree. Nice patina with rich
reddish undertones. |
