Detail Photos

An exceedingly rare deer skin mask that originated in a Brahmin village in Nepal's middle hills. It is from a shamanic ritual context, characterized by a syncretic blend of Hindu myth and old local hill animism. It is unusual to find this kind of animal skin item in a "high caste" context, used by Brahmin (Bahoon) people.  Though it is documented fact that shamans coming from the Brahmin community often take as there "guru" for Shamanic studies people of the hill tribe castes - Tamang, Magar, Gurung, Thami, etc. simply because those are the communities with the most adept shamans in the middle hills area.
