Detail photos
I find this mask
fascinating aestheticaly. Originating in the vicinity of Dolakha, a Newar
village north of Kathmandu, it is a stunning old mask with a
tremendous presence. This is an antique mask in good
condition. It is painted but has evolved a lustrous patina over
the years. Normally the Newar masks are created in the
likeness of the gods and goddesses of the major religions of the
area - Hinduism and Buddhism. This one is unique in that
it exhibits a style that has clearly been heavily influenced by
the middle hills tribal aesthetic. This is not surprising really
given the area of Dolakha is peopled by Thamis and Tamangs among
other ethnic groups, and the area has a strong middle hills
shamanic tradition. A fantastic and very unique piece. |
