Detail Photos
Another brutish
visage from the far western Middle Hills. This mask dates
to the early years of the 20th century, but has no doubt seen
successive alterations over the years, such as the addition of
pigments, and the nails in the forehead would seem to indicate
there may have been some kind of animal fur attached at the top.
Notably the back has also seen relatively late manipulation, in
the way of carving to the back side. This may well have
been meant to make the mask more appealing for the person who
had to wear it, as the back may have been very dirty and had
perhaps evolved into insect housing over the years. To
re-carve the back would have been an effective response to such
insect infestation and the like. |
