~ Detail Photos ~
A very good example of Naga bead work in the form of an old
necklace from the Rengma Naga. The Naga are a diverse tribal
group whose homeland is the old North East frontier area of
India and Western Burma. This old necklace has cornelian and
glass beads, the long shell beads the Naga ingeniously extract
from the core of the chank shells, as well as highly desirable
chank shell clasps. The whole piece is in good condition with
expected minor loss in the form of chips and cracks to only a
very few of the old beads. Serious Naga collectors will find
this an appealing offer.
The Naga were avid head hunters and are
something of a cultural anomaly in an area surrounded by
Vajrayana Buddhism to the North and West, Hinduism to the south
and Theravadin Buddhism in the East. A fascinating people with
very distinctive beliefs and material culture.
