Detail Photos
This is a fine
example of the large antique drums found in provincial Buddhist
temples (gompas) in the Nepal / Tibet border area. These
are very large and were typically supported by a stand or a rope
coming from the ceiling and attached to the iron ring at the top
of the wood drum. The handle has evolved a gorgeous patina
with years of use and is carved in foliate and curvilinear
patterns, terminating with a dorje (Sanskrit = vajra) at the end
of the handle. The curved drum stick is included.
The drum has a fine sonorous bass tone.
