Detail Views
This is a beautiful antique shamanic phurba with classic
styling. It is carved from a dense and very heavy wood,
with a unique striated wood grain pattern. The 3 faced
phurba deity's face shows a century or more of regular use and
the features have been softened with time. Curvilinear
carved bands frame the central grip which is carved as is
typical into the shape of the dorje (Sanskrit = vajra).
The blade emerges from the gaping jaws of a Makara, a mythical
beast associated with fertility. The Makara clenches a
limp Naga in its jaws and the head hangs on one side while the
tale is rendered on the opposite blade face. This is an
extremely old phurba with perfect balance as one would want in a
real dagger, and it will be a highly valued piece in any
collection.
